Banana bread or banana cake?

Growing up I ate banana cake. As an adult I eat banana bread. From what I remember of my immature palate as a kid, to what I taste now as a sophisticated banana bread connoisseur, they are the same.
Are they? If so, what happened. When did the name change?

Banana bread is different - it's denser, and you can spread butter on it. The difference I can see from the recipes I have is the addition of maple syrup, but there may be more to the ratio of other ingredients that I haven't picked up on. It's also cooked on a lower temperature, so it caramelises better, which probably also helps with the density.
